What Is Green Peel, And How Does It Actually Work?

When clients hear the word "peel," they often picture something aggressive, redness, flaking, and days hiding at home. Green Peel is something quite different. It's one of the oldest professional skin treatments still in use today, and the reason it's lasted over 60 years is simple: it works.

Let me explain what's actually happening during the treatment and why it produces the results it does.

The Origins

Green Peel was developed in 1958 by German dermatologist Dr. Christine Schrammek. The formula is based entirely on natural herbs, no acids, no chemicals, no synthetic ingredients. It was originally used in medical dermatology and has since become one of the most widely recognised professional skin treatments in the world.

What makes it distinctive is the philosophy behind it: work with the skin's own renewal process rather than forcing a reaction through chemical means. At En Beauty in Northcote, Green Peel sits alongside the Japanese Meridian Face Lift as one of our two core facial treatments.

What Happens During the Treatment

The treatment involves massaging a blend of finely milled herbs directly into the skin. The physical action of the massage, combined with the active properties of the herbs, works on the upper layers of the epidermis to stimulate cell renewal, boost circulation, and increase oxygen supply to the skin.

The skin's natural renewal cycle typically takes around 28 days. Green Peel compresses that process down to just 5 days, which is why the results appear quickly and feel so noticeable, you're essentially fast-tracking your skin's ability to resurface itself.

Importantly, because the herbs share the same pH as the skin, the skin barrier isn't compromised in the process. This sets it apart from acid-based peels, which work by disrupting the skin's natural chemistry to force exfoliation.

What Can It Treat?

Uneven skin tone and pigmentation

By accelerating cell turnover, Green Peel helps bring fresher, more evenly pigmented skin to the surface. Clients dealing with sun damage, post-inflammatory marks, or general dullness often see a noticeable improvement in clarity and brightness after a course of treatments.

Acne and congestion

The improved circulation and deep cleansing action of the herbs helps to clear congestion and reduce the conditions that allow breakouts to persist. For clients with active or recurring acne, Green Peel can be a turning point when other approaches haven't been effective.

As the skin renews itself more rapidly, the overall texture becomes smoother and more refined. Collagen production is also stimulated through the process, which gradually improves the skin's firmness and elasticity over time.

Scarring

For deeper concerns like acne scarring or surface irregularities, the more intensive Classic method of Green Peel, which involves a visible peeling phase around day 3 can significantly reduce the appearance of scarring with repeated treatments.

What to Expect After Treatment

The experience after your treatment depends on which method you've had. The lightest option - Fresh Up, typically involves no visible peeling, just a glow. The Energy and Classic methods involve progressively more skin renewal, with Classic producing a visible peeling phase starting around day 3 and completing by day 5.

During the renewal phase, aftercare is important. Your therapist will provide specific guidance, but the general rule is to keep the skin calm, avoid active ingredients, and let the process complete naturally without picking or rushing it.
