Your First Lash Extensions - What I Tell Every New Client

There is a particular kind of quiet that happens at the start of a first lash appointment.
The client is lying back, eyes closed, and I can tell from the way they are holding themselves that they are not entirely sure what is about to happen. They have done their research - most people who find their way to En Beauty have - but research and experience are different things. They do not know what the application will feel like, or whether the result will suit them, or how they will look when they sit up.
I have been doing this for over 18 years, and I still find this moment one of the most important parts of the appointment. Not the application itself, but the conversation before it. What I say in those first 15 minutes shapes everything that follows.
So here is what I tell every first-time lash client. All of it.

First - What Are Eyelash Extensions, Actually?
Eyelash extensions are individual synthetic fibres, applied one by one to each of your own natural lashes using a semi-permanent adhesive. Not glued to the skin. Not applied in strips. Each single extension is bonded to a single natural lash, individually, with the right amount of adhesive for that lash.
When it is done correctly, the result moves with your natural lashes. It grows out with them, sheds with them, and looks, to most people who see it, like simply a better version of your own.
I have worn lash extensions myself for over 18 years and my natural lashes have never been damaged. That is not marketing. It is the direct result of having extensions applied correctly and weighted appropriately for what my own lashes can support. I mention this because it is the most common concern I hear from first-timers, and I want to address it before it becomes the thing that stops someone from trying something they might genuinely love.

The Niawase Consultation - Why Your First Appointment Is Longer
At En Beauty, a first lash appointment runs approximately extra 15 minutes. That is longer than a standard fill, and the reason is the consultation at the start.
Before I apply a single extension, I sit with you and look at your natural lashes properly. I check their length, thickness and density. I look at the health of the lash root. I ask about your lifestyle - To help me design your set, are we preparing for a special occasion or for effortless everyday wear? Do you typically apply eye makeup as part of your daily routine? Do you prefer a look that is distinctly visible, or a subtle enhancement that appears natural even upon close inspection? Is there anything you dislike about certain styles?
These things matter more than most people expect, and they directly affect which style and which adhesive will give you the best result.
I also ask what you are hoping for. Not what style you have seen on Instagram, necessarily - but what you want your lashes to feel like. Do you want to walk out looking clearly different, or do you want something that your friends cannot quite place but that makes you look more rested? Do you want to stop thinking about mascara entirely, or just to have more definition on the days you want it?
The Niawase Styling - the Japanese approach that shapes everything at En Beauty - is about finding what genuinely belongs to you. Not what looks good in the abstract. Not a standard set applied to everyone who books the same style. What looks right on your face, for your life.
None of this is an upsell. It is how a result gets designed rather than just applied.

Which Style Is Right for a First Set?
Most first-time clients start with Classic Natural. One extension on each natural lash, a relatively conservative length, a curl that opens the eye without dramatising it. The result is longer, darker lashes that look like the best version of your own - not obviously extensions, just noticeably better.
This is my usual recommendation for a first set, and the reason is simple. It gives you the clearest sense of what eyelash extensions feel like and look like on your face before you decide whether to go fuller. You can always add volume at your second appointment. You cannot undo a first set that turned out to be more than you were ready for.
Here is how the main styles differ:
Classic - one extension per natural lash, natural and defined, the lightest option. From $129.
Hybrid - a mix of Classic and Volume, adds texture and fullness while keeping a soft finish. The most popular style at En Beauty. From $175.
Volume - multiple ultra-fine extensions fanned onto each natural lash, maximum fullness while remaining lightweight. From $190.
Your therapist will make a specific recommendation at your consultation based on your natural lash health and the result you have described. If you arrive with a style in mind, say so - but be open to hearing why a slightly different approach might serve you better.
A Word About LED Eyelash Extensions
At En Beauty, we use a Japanese-developed LED adhesive rather than standard lash glue. The difference is in how the bond cures. Standard adhesive cures through moisture in the air, which means a 24 to 48 hour waiting period after your appointment before the lashes can get wet. LED adhesive is activated by a specific wavelength of light during application, so the bond is complete before you leave the studio.
For first-timers, the two most relevant advantages are:
Significantly fewer fumes during the appointment - more comfortable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers
No post-appointment restrictions - you can wash your face, swim or go to the gym that same day
The LED system also tends to produce a more flexible bond, which means the extension moves more naturally with the lash through daily life. For most clients, the first question after I explain this is: why would anyone use the standard adhesive? The answer is that not every studio has invested in the technology. En Beauty has.
What the Application Actually Feels Like
You lie back, close your eyes, and - genuinely - most people fall asleep.
The room is quiet. The appointment is not being rushed toward the next client. Extensions are applied one by one in complete silence, which takes time but produces a result that cannot be achieved any faster without compromising it.
You may feel the occasional touch of a tool near the eye - nothing sharp, nothing uncomfortable. If anything causes discomfort, say so immediately. A correctly positioned extension on a correctly isolated natural lash should not hurt at any point during or after the application.
The appointment ends with a final check. I go over every lash for symmetry, spacing and placement before you sit up. You will leave knowing exactly what to do to care for your new lashes, and when to book your first infill.
The Questions I Get Asked Most Often
These come up at nearly every first appointment. I would rather answer them here than have them sit unanswered while someone talks themselves out of booking.
Will they damage my natural lashes?
Not when they are applied correctly and weighted to what your natural lashes can support. I assess this at your consultation and at every return appointment. If your lashes are not in a condition to safely take extensions, I will tell you - and I will tell you what to do instead.
Will they look fake?
A Classic Natural set designed for your eye shape tends to get comments like 'your lashes look incredible' rather than 'I can tell you have extensions.' The Niawase approach means the result is made for your face, not pulled from a standard menu. If you want something more visible, that is also achievable - your therapist will show you what different styles look like before committing.
What if I don't like them?
Lash extensions can be professionally removed at any time. At En Beauty, removal takes around 20 minutes. Please do not attempt to remove them at home by pulling - that is the one guaranteed way to cause damage to the natural lash.
Can I wear contacts?
Yes. You'll need to remove them for the appointment and wear your glasses - bring them with you. Day-to-day, contacts are fine once you have extensions. The LED adhesive we use is particularly suitable for contact lens wearers because the fume level during application is significantly lower than standard glue.
How much maintenance is involved?
A full set typically looks its best for the first two to three weeks. Most clients book an infill every two to three weeks to keep the set looking full. Infills are shorter appointments and priced lower than a full set. The aftercare itself is straightforward - oil-free products around the eye area, gentle cleansing every couple of days, a spoolie brush in the morning.
Is a Lash Lift a Better Starting Point for You?
Sometimes, yes - and I would rather say that than book you into extensions that are not the right fit.
A keratin lash lift works entirely with your own natural lashes. No extensions are added, no adhesive is applied to individual lashes. A gentle lifting solution reshapes each lash from root to tip, curling it upward and setting it in place for six to eight weeks. Paired with a lash tint, it is one of the most genuinely low-maintenance treatments I offer.
A lash lift might suit you better if:
You want enhancement that feels invisible - something that improves what you already have rather than adding to it
You prefer a lower maintenance commitment - no infills, no ongoing aftercare routine beyond the first 24 hours
You are not yet sure about eyelash extensions and want to try something lower commitment first
Your natural lashes are in good condition and you mainly want them to stay lifted and open rather than longer or fuller
You are very active, travel frequently, or want a result that genuinely requires nothing from you between appointments
I often suggest a lash lift as a first treatment for clients who are curious about lash work but feel uncertain. It is an honest way to discover how your natural lashes respond to a treatment before committing to extensions. Many clients try the lift, love it, and stay with it. Others try it and then decide they want more - and extensions are the natural next step.
Both options start from $129 at En Beauty. Both include a proper consultation.
How to Prepare for Your First Lash Appointment
A few practical things that make a difference:
Arrive with clean lashes - no mascara, eyeliner or oily products around the eye area
If you wear contacts, bring your glasses (if you prefer to remove the concacts)
Wear comfortable clothing - you will be lying still for up to 90 minutes
Avoid caffeine if you tend to fidget
Arrive on time - the consultation at the start is part of the appointment and cannot be shortened without affecting the result
That is genuinely all. The rest is my job.
What Happens After
You will leave with a clear brief on aftercare - what to avoid in the first 24 hours, how to clean the lashes, when to book your infill. The first 24 hours are the most important window for the adhesive bond, so take those seriously.
After that, most clients settle into a rhythm quite quickly. The infill cycle becomes part of the routine. The morning mascara stops being something you reach for. The lashes just become part of how you look.
Some clients come for one set before an event and do not return for months. Others make infills a regular appointment. Both are completely fine. There is no obligation, and there is never pressure at En Beauty to go fuller or more dramatic than what you actually want.
