LED Lash Extensions vs Normal Lash Extensions: What's the Difference?

Updated: Mar 21

If you've been getting lash extensions for a while, you may have started hearing about LED lashes and wondering whether they're just a marketing term or whether there's something genuinely different going on.

There is. And once I explain how they work, most clients understand straight away why they behave differently on the lash line.

How Normal Lash Extensions Work

Traditional lash extensions use a cyanoacrylate-based adhesive, the same family of adhesive used in most professional lash glues. The bond forms through a process called polymerisation, which is triggered by moisture in the air and on the lash.

This is why the first 24 hours after your appointment matter so much. During that window, the adhesive is still curing and is sensitive to water, steam, and heat. The faster and more completely the adhesive cures, the stronger the bond and the longer your extensions last.

Standard adhesive works well in the right conditions good humidity, correct technique, and careful aftercare. But it does have variables. Temperature and humidity in the room, the natural moisture of your lashes, and how carefully you avoid water in those first hours all play a role in how well the bond sets.

How LED Lash Extensions Work

LED lash extensions use a different adhesive, one that doesn't rely on moisture to cure. Instead, it cures through exposure to a specific wavelength of LED light. Once the extension is placed, a small LED device is passed over the lashes, and the adhesive bonds almost instantly.

This changes a few things in a meaningful way. Because the cure is light-activated rather than moisture-dependent, the bond is consistent regardless of the humidity in the room or the condition of the lashes on the day. There's no window of vulnerability in the same way, the bond is fully set before you leave the chair.

What This Means for You as a Client

• The first 24 hours

With normal extensions, keeping your lashes completely dry for the first 24 hours is essential, no washing around the eye area, no steam, and no sweaty exercise.

With LED extensions, the adhesive is already fully cured, so you have much more flexibility from the moment you leave. This makes a real difference for clients with active lifestyles or those who find the 24-hour window difficult to manage.

• Sensitivity

Cyanoacrylate adhesive produces a small amount of fumes during the curing process, which some clients find irritating, particularly those with sensitive eyes. Because LED adhesive cures with light rather than through an ongoing chemical reaction, there are no fumes involved. Clients who have experienced irritation or sensitivity with traditional adhesive often find LED extensions much more comfortable.

• Retention

Both methods can achieve excellent retention with proper aftercare. That said, LED extensions tend to perform more consistently because the cure isn't affected by external variables. If you've had mixed results with traditional lashes, extensions that held brilliantly one appointment and dropped quickly the next. LED adhesive removes some of those inconsistencies.

• The application experience

The process feels similar for both. You'll be lying comfortably with your eyes closed while each extension is placed individually. The main difference is the brief LED curing step, which takes only a few seconds per section. Most clients don't notice much difference in how the appointment feels overall.

Who May Not Be Suited to LED Lash Extensions

If you have a known sensitivity to light or a condition such as photosensitivity or lupus, the LED curing step may not be appropriate. Clients who wear certain medications that increase light sensitivity should also flag this before switching. When in doubt, I'll always recommend a patch test and a proper consultation before your first LED appointment.

So Which One Is Right for You?

If you've been happy with your traditional lash extensions and have no issues with sensitivity or the 24-hour aftercare window, there's no urgent reason to switch. Traditional adhesive, applied well, gives beautiful results.

But if you have sensitive eyes, an active lifestyle, or you've had inconsistent retention in the past, LED extensions are worth considering seriously. The technology has improved significantly, and for the right client, the difference is noticeable.

At En Beauty, I offer both, and I'm happy to talk through which option makes more sense for your lashes and lifestyle at your next appointment. You can find out more about the lash extension services I offer here, or get in touch if you have questions before booking.
