How Long Do Lash Extensions Last?

Updated: Mar 21

It is one of the first things people ask when they're considering lash extensions for the first time: how long will they actually last?

The short answer is two to four weeks between infills, four to six weeks until all lash extensions come off completely. But the more useful answer is that longevity depends on several things: your natural lash cycle, the style you choose, and how well you care for them at home. Understanding these three factors will help you get the most out of every set.

Your Natural Lash Cycle

Each of your natural lashes goes through a continuous growth cycle, growing, resting, and shedding over a period of around 90 days. At any given time, your lashes are at different stages of this cycle, which means some shedding every day is completely normal.

Because extensions are attached to your natural lashes, they shed along with them. This is not a product failure, it is biology. A full set will begin to look less dense after two to three weeks as the natural lash cycle progresses, which is why infill appointments are recommended at that point rather than waiting for a full shed.

Lash Extension Longevity by Style

Classic lash extensions at En Beauty Northcote

Classic extensions, one extension per natural lash, are the most conservative in terms of weight and coverage. They tend to look very full immediately after application and remain beautiful for two to three weeks before an infill is recommended.

Volume and hybrid sets, which involve multiple fine lashes per natural lash, give a fuller initial result. Because the individual lash fibres are lighter, they can be gentler on the natural lash over time. Many clients find their volume sets look great for closer to three to four weeks before wanting an infill.

The style that's right for you depends on your natural lash density, your lifestyle, and the look you want to maintain. I assess all of these at your initial consultation.

Longevity by Glue: LED vs Normal

Normal adhesive, the industry standard used by most salons, creates a strong and reliable bond that has been trusted for years. Sets tend to look very full immediately after application and remain beautiful for three to four weeks before an infill is recommended.

LED glue, developed through Japanese lash technology, works differently. Rather than curing through moisture in the air, the bond is activated by a specific wavelength of LED light, creating a faster, more complete cure from the moment your appointment ends. Many clients find their LED sets hold fuller for longer, and are comfortable stretching to four to five weeks before wanting an infill.

The glue that's right for you depends on your lifestyle, your sensitivity to fumes, and how often you want to be in the salon chair. I assess all of these at your initial consultation.

What Affects Longevity?

Aftercare has a significant impact on how long your extensions last. With normal adhesive, the most important rule is to keep the lashes completely dry for the first 24 to 48 hours after application, allowing the adhesive to fully cure. With LED glue, this waiting period is eliminated entirely because the bond is cured instantly under the LED light. You can wash your face, swim, or visit the sauna the very same day.

After that initial period, gentle cleansing is actually beneficial for both types. Clean lashes retain their extensions longer than lashes with product buildup at the root.

Oil-based products around the eye area break down the adhesive bond and shorten retention significantly, this applies to both normal and LED glue, though LED is somewhat more resistant. I advise all clients to check their skincare and makeup remover for oils, and to switch to oil-free alternatives where needed.

Sleeping on your side or stomach can create friction that pulls at the extensions over time. A silk or satin pillowcase reduces this considerably, regardless of which glue you have.

Rubbing or picking at the lashes is the fastest way to shorten their lifespan and can damage the natural lash underneath. If something doesn't feel right, please come back and I'll assess it. Don't pull.

The Fill Schedule, What to Expect

Before after hybrid lash extensions at En Beauty Northcote

Most clients at En Beauty come in for infills every two to three weeks. At an infill appointment, I remove any extensions that have grown out or shed poorly, and apply fresh extensions to maintain the fullness of the set. Infill appointments are shorter and more affordable than a full set, they're designed to keep your lashes looking as good as the day they were applied.

If you leave it longer than four weeks between infills, you may find that enough natural shedding has occurred that a full new set is more practical than an infill. I'll always advise you honestly on which option makes more sense when you come in.
