Frequently Asked Questions

If you're considering lash extensions, brow treatments, or Japanese facial therapies, it's natural to have questions before booking. Below you'll find answers to some of the most common questions about treatments at En Beauty in Northcote, Auckland.

Lash Extensions

How long do lash extensions last?

Lash extensions typically last 3-4 weeks, while our LED system extends that to 4–6 weeks. Because your natural lashes shed in a cycle, you’ll notice a gradual thinning over time. Most of our clients come in for a refresh every 3-4 weeks to keep their look full and fresh. How long yours lasts depends on your individual lash cycle, aftercare habits, and lifestyle, oil-based products, steam, and rubbing are the main culprits behind early loss.

What are eyelash extensions, and how are they applied?

Eyelash extensions are individual synthetic fibres, attached one by one to each of your natural lashes using a medical-grade adhesive. The technique requires the surrounding lashes and skin to be carefully isolated so that no two lashes are bonded together. At En Beauty, we apply every set by hand, with each extension chosen to suit the length, curl, and thickness of your natural lash. A full set takes between one hour to one and a half hours, depending on the style.

What styles of lash extensions are available?

The main styles are Classic, Hybrid, and Volume. Classic extensions place one extension on each natural lash for a clean, defined look. Volume uses fans of two to six ultra-fine lashes per natural lash, creating a softer, fuller effect. Hybrid blends both for a textured finish that sits between the two. At En Beauty, the style is always chosen in consultation with you taking into account the health of your natural lashes, your eye shape, and the result you're after. We specialise in natural, wearable long-lasting results rather than dramatic or heavy sets.

Do lash extensions damage your natural lashes?

No, lash extensions do not damage natural lashes. The key word is correctly, extensions must be the appropriate weight and length for the natural lash they're bonded to, and no two natural lashes should be stuck together. At En Beauty, we follow strict lash health protocols informed by Izumi’s international training and years of practice. If your natural lashes are not in a condition suitable for extensions, we will tell you honestly rather than proceed with an application that could cause harm.

Can I wear mascara with lash extensions?

You can, but you usually won't need to. We generally recommend skipping traditional mascara, as the rubbing required to remove it can easily damage your natural lashes and extensions. If you do choose to wear mascara,  we suggest our Black Tint Coating instead! Unlike mascara, it only needs to be applied once a week and actually helps seal the attachment to make your extensions last longer. Since it stays on for the week, there's no need for daily removal, keeping your natural lashes safe and healthy.

How do I wash and care for my lash extensions?

Clean lash extensions are healthy lash extensions. After the initial 24-hour curing period, wash your lashes every two to three days using a gentle, oil-free lash cleanser, ideally a foaming lash shampoo applied with a soft brush. Rinse thoroughly with cool water and pat (never rub) dry. Brush them through with a clean spoolie in the morning. Avoid oil-based skincare, eye makeup removers with oils, and steam from saunas or very hot showers. Sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase can also help reduce friction and extend the life of your set.

How do I shower with lash extensions?

After the first 24 hours, you can shower. Keep the water temperature moderate rather than very hot, steam can loosen the adhesive bond over time. Avoid directing a strong jet of water directly onto your lashes, and don't rub your eye area. Pat your face dry rather than wiping it, and gently brush your lashes back into shape with a spoolie once they're dry. Most clients adjust their shower routine quickly and find it becomes second nature.

Can I swim with lash extensions?

Yes, after the first 24-hour curing period you can swim. Salt water and chlorinated pools are fine, though prolonged exposure will gradually soften the adhesive bond and may shorten the longevity of your set. If you swim regularly, you may find your refills are needed a little earlier. After swimming, rinse your lashes with fresh water and allow them to dry naturally before brushing through.

Are lash extensions safe for sensitive eyes or allergies?

Many clients with sensitive eyes wear lash extensions comfortably. Reactions are most commonly linked to the adhesive, specifically to cyanoacrylate, which is the bonding agent in most lash glues. If you have a known adhesive sensitivity, tell us before your appointment, we can discuss options and, in some cases, perform a patch test. Mild tearing or temporary sensitivity immediately after application is normal and usually settles within a few hours. A true allergic reaction, redness, swelling, or itching that persists or worsens is uncommon but should be addressed promptly.

Can I get lash extensions while pregnant?

There is no clinical evidence that lash extensions or their adhesive pose a risk during pregnancy when applied in a well-ventilated space. That said, we always recommend speaking with your lead maternity carer first, particularly in the first trimester. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can also affect your natural lash cycle and how well adhesive bonds, so results may vary. At En Beauty, we're happy to discuss your individual circumstances and ensure you're comfortable throughout your appointment.

How do I remove lash extensions safely?

Please don't attempt to pull or pick off lash extensions at home, this is the most reliable way to damage your natural lashes. A trained technician can remove extensions safely using a professional-grade adhesive remover, which dissolves the bond without disturbing your natural lashes. If you're between appointments and losing extensions naturally, let them shed on their own cycle. If you need a full removal, book with us and it can usually be done in under 30 minutes.

LED Lash Extensions

What are LED lash extensions?

LED lash extensions use a specialised, gentle light to instantly cure a medical-grade adhesive. Resulting in 30% better retention, less irritation for sensitive eyes, and the freedom to get them wet immediately. We use Japanese LED lash extensions which is the highest-quality lash technology available, allowing you to get them wet immediately with less stinging or fumes.

How is it different from traditional lash extensions?

Traditional glue can take up to 24 hours to fully dry and is sensitive to humidity. With our Japanese LED system, the bond sets in just 2 seconds. This means no fume sting, better retention, and zero Downtime.

Is the LED light safe for my eyes?

Absolutely. We use a low-intensity, targeted LED light that is specifically calibrated for lash applications. Your eyes remain closed throughout the process, and we use protective patches to ensure total safety for your skin and eyes.

Are there any medical reasons I should avoid LED lashes?

Yes, while this method is very safe for most, we cannot perform the treatment if you have extreme light sensitivity (Photodermatosis) or light-triggered epilepsy. If you are currently taking photosensitizing medications (like some acne treatments or antibiotics), please let us know, as these can make your skin reactive to the LED light.

Who is this treatment best for?

It’s perfect for everyone, but especially for clients who have sensitive eyes, wants longer-lasting results (fewer refill appointments!), doesn’t want to wait 24 hours to shower or sweat.

Does it feel different during the application?

Not at all! Most clients find it even more comfortable because there are no lingering fumes. You might feel a very slight, gentle warmth for a split second as the light cures the bond, but most people don't feel anything except relaxation.

Brow Lamination & Brow Treatments

What is brow lamination?

Brow lamination is a semi-permanent treatment that restructures the brow hairs into a set shape typically brushed upward for a full, fluffy effect, using a two-step chemical process. It's often described as a 'brow perm'. The treatment straightens and smooths each hair, allowing them to sit flat and uniformly directional for four to six weeks. Brow lamination has become one of the most requested brow treatments globally, and for good reason: it's effective for sparse, unruly, or downward-growing brows, and requires very little daily maintenance.

What is eyebrow lamination? Is it the same as brow lamination?

Yes, eyebrow lamination and brow lamination are the same treatment. The terms are used interchangeably.

How long does brow lamination last?

Brow lamination typically lasts four to six weeks, sometimes up to eight weeks depending on your hair texture and aftercare. Coarser brow hairs tend to hold the result longer; finer hairs may soften sooner. To extend the result, keep the brow area moisturised, avoid rubbing the brows, and use a brow serum overnight. Avoid getting your brows wet or using steam for the first 24 hours after treatment.

What is brow tinting?

Eyebrow tinting is a semi-permanent dye treatment applied to the brow hairs (and sometimes the surrounding skin) to add colour, definition, and the appearance of fullness. It's particularly effective for clients with light, sparse, or greying brows. Tinting is often combined with brow shaping, lamination, or a lash tint for a cohesive result.

What is Hybrid brow tinting?

Hybrid brow tint is a professional-grade dye that stains both the skin and the brow hairs. It’s perfect if you want to define your shape or fill in any sparse gaps. It typically lasts up to 7 days on the skin and up to 7 weeks on the hair, making it a fantastic, long-lasting alternative to daily brow makeup.

How long does brow tinting last?

A Standard Tint typically lasts 3 to 4 weeks on the hair with a very subtle skin stain, while our Hybrid Tint offers a more defined look by staining the skin for up to a week and the hair for up to 7 weeks. For both options, your results will depend on your skin type and lifestyle, oily skin or frequent exfoliation can cause the tint to fade faster, so most En Beauty clients find a 4 to 5 week cycle perfect for maintaining their look.

Is brow tinting safe?

When performed by a trained professional using appropriate products, eyebrow tinting is safe. At En Beauty, we use high-quality tints and perform a patch test for new clients or those with known skin sensitivities. The skin around the brow area can be sensitive, and a reaction, though uncommon, is possible. If you've had a reaction to hair dye or similar products before, please let us know ahead of your appointment.

What is brow shaping and tinting?

Brow shaping and tinting combines the two most fundamental brow treatments into a single appointment. Shaping, achieved through waxing, threading, or tweezing removes unwanted hairs and defines the brow arch. Tinting then adds colour and definition to the shaped brow. Together, they create a polished, well-defined result that requires minimal daily effort. It's one of the most popular services at En Beauty and an excellent starting point if you haven't had your brows professionally treated before.

Should I get brow lamination or brow tinting? Which is better?

They address different things. Lamination changes the direction and structure of your brow hairs; tinting changes their colour. Many clients benefit from both,  in fact, a lamination and tint combination is one of the most transformative brow treatments available. If your brows are already the colour you want but just unruly or sparse-looking, lamination alone may be all you need. If your brows are well-shaped but pale or patchy, tinting alone can make a significant difference. During your consultation, we will assess your brows and recommend what will have the most impact for you specifically.

How often can I tint my brows?

A four-to-six week cycle is typical for brow tinting. More frequent applications aren't necessary and repeated chemical treatments too close together can dry out the hair. We'd recommend aligning your tinting appointments with your brow shaping appointments for a streamlined routine.

Can I wash my face after brow tinting?

Wait at least 12 hours before wetting the brow area after tinting. In the days that follow, cleanse gently, avoid abrasive scrubs, exfoliating acids, or rubbing the brow area. When removing makeup, be gentle and use products that aren't specifically designed to strip colour. Micellar water or a gentle balm cleanser is kinder to brow tints than foaming cleansers with active ingredients.

Japanese Meridian Face Lift

What is a Japanese meridian face lift?

A Japanese meridian face lift is a holistic treatment and an approach that emphasises long-term skin health, gentle technique, and working with the skin's natural functions rather than against them. Using specific pressure point techniques applied to the face and décolletage, the treatment aims to release tension, improve circulation, stimulate the lymphatic system, and restore balance. Clients often describe a sense of deep calm and a visible brightness or lift in the skin immediately after treatment. It is non-invasive, completely natural, and deeply relaxing.

What is the difference between a Japanese meridian face lift and a regular facial?

A standard facial typically focuses on surface-level cleansing, extraction, and hydration using a fairly standardised sequence of steps. Izumi's Japanese meridian face lift takes a more considered approach: the technique is more nuanced, the massage work is more targeted, and the philosophy behind it is oriented toward cumulative skin health rather than an immediate glow that fades. There's also a mindfulness and ritual quality to the treatment that makes it as restorative for the mind as for the skin.

What skin concerns do Japanese meridian face lift address?

Japanese facials are well-suited to a broad range of concerns, including dehydration, uneven tone, dullness and early signs of ageing such as loss of firmness or fine lines. The emphasis on precise facial massage technique means the treatment also has a notable lifting and contouring effect. If you have active breakouts, highly sensitised skin, or specific dermatological conditions, we will discuss whether the treatment is appropriate and tailor the approach accordingly.

How often should I have a Japanese meridian face lift?

For clients who are working on a specific skin concern, a series of four to six treatments spaced two to three weeks apart is often recommended. For maintenance and general skin health, monthly appointments typically produce excellent results. The Japanese approach views consistent, gentle care as far more effective than occasional intensive interventions and the cumulative benefit of regular treatment reflects this.

What is Reiki, and do you offer it at En Beauty?

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing practice in which a practitioner places hands lightly on or above the body to facilitate relaxation and the body's natural healing response. It is deeply calming and is often described as a profoundly restful experience. At En Beauty, Reiki is available as a standalone treatment or can be incorporated into a longer appointment for clients who are drawn to a more holistic, mind-body approach to wellness. It is suitable for virtually everyone and has no contraindications in healthy adults.

Are your face lift, facial and wellness treatments available on the North Shore?

Yes. En Beauty is located at B2/129 Onewa Road, Northcote, which is easily accessible from across the North Shore, including Takapuna, Birkenhead, Devonport, and Albany. Some of our clients also travel from further afield, including central Auckland and the wider city. The studio is designed as a quiet retreat from the pace of everyday life, and we think the journey is worth it.

Green Peel

What is the Green Peel®, and how does it work?

The Green Peel® is a medically-developed, all-natural herbal peeling treatment that has been a global success for over 60 years. Unlike chemical peels, it contains no acids or harsh additives. Instead, a unique blend of herbs, enzymes, and vitamins is massaged into the skin to naturally stimulate blood circulation and trigger the skin’s own renewal process.

Does the skin always peel after a treatment?

Not necessarily! We offer three different methods depending on your skin goals: Fresh Up: A gentle "glow" treatment with no peeling, perfect for refreshing the skin. Energy: A revitalising boost that improves skin texture without visible peeling. Classic: Our "problem solver" method where the skin visibly peels over 5 days, completely renewing the complexion.

Is the treatment painful?

During the herbal massage, you will feel a tingling or "prickly" sensation as the herbs penetrate the skin. Most clients find it slightly unusual, but very manageable. After the treatment, your skin may feel like a mild sunburn, which is a sign that the natural herbs are working their magic!

Can I get my skin wet after a Green Peel Classic?

If you choose the Classic treatment, it is very important not to let water touch the treated area for 5 days. This allows the herbs to work effectively. We will provide you with a specific home-care routine and special products to cleanse and protect your skin during this time.

Who is the Green Peel best for?

Because it is 100% natural, it is incredibly versatile! It is a fantastic "problem solver" for sun damage and pigmentation, impure skin or acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles or loss of elasticity or tired-looking skin.

For facials: arrive with a clean face if possible, and let us know of any active skin conditions, recent treatments, or products you're currently using. For all appointments: if you have any known allergies or sensitivities, please mention these when booking. We want every visit to be as comfortable and effective as possible.

Do I need a consultation before my first appointment?

Yes! We require a complimentary 15-minute consultation for all new clients.
